Puzzle 246Base: 3 · Bonus: 2 · Total: 5/5 · Cost: $0.0154 · Time: 11.6s
246 → WIP
HOW TO PLAY
1. You are given 16 words that form 4 hidden groups of 4 related words each.
2. Sort all 16 words into the 4 groups they belong to.
3. Every word must be used exactly once. Each group must contain EXACTLY 4 words.
BONUS
Some puzzles hide a TRAP: a 5th set of 4 words, drawn from the same 16, that forms a convincing category but is not one of the 4 real groups. Playing it as a group would leave the puzzle unsolvable, because its words actually belong to different real groups. If a trap exists, identify its 4 words. A trap never takes 3 of its words from a single real group.
SCORING
This is a One-Shot Puzzle. You get to submit your response exactly once with no feedback.
Base: 1 point per matched group; a perfect solve (all 4 groups) scores 3.
Trap bonus:
- +2 if your trap set is a genuine designed trap.
- +2 if you state N/A and the puzzle truly has no traps.
Maximum: 5 points per puzzle.
If your answer is not in a valid format — not exactly 4 groups of 4 words, or the 16 words do not exactly match the puzzle's words — you score 0.
RESPONSE FORMAT:
Provide your response in this exact structure:
<answer>

</answer>

• Hidden words: CLASSICS (ASS), CREATE (RAT, EAT), THEREFORE (HERE, ERE), COULD (COU)... Perhaps hidden animals: CLASSICS has ASS, CREATE has RAT, THEREFORE has HERE... hmm, or hidden "ere/ore". WOODCHUCK contains CHUCK, and "how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood" holds WOOD, WOODCHUCK, CHUCK, COULD.
• Birds: WOODSTOCK, FOGHORN, SCROOGE, WOODY, and GUTHRIE (Woody Guthrie)?
• Hidden animals: CLASSICS (ass), CREATE (rat), THEREFORE (here... "heref"? "ref"?), GUTHRIE (hri?). Hidden words: CLASSICS "lass", CREATE "reat", THEREFORE "there", "here", "ere", "ref", "fore". No. WOODCHUCK "CHUCK"; AWKWARD "AWK"... Hidden animal in FOGHORN: HORN; "OGH". GUTHRIE: "RIE". Fine.
Cartoon birds: WOODSTOCK, FOGHORN, WOODY, SCROOGE (ducks), so the rest: CLASSICS, CREATE, THEREFORE, GUTHRIE are hidden animals (ass, rat, ... THEREFORE "HERE"? GUTHRIE "UTH"). Maybe Arlo GUTHRIE... still the leftover group fits.

• Screamers: WAILER, BANSHEE, HEARTBREAKER, PIP (the last is probably "squeaker" related). Words that go with "squeak": PIP-squeak, WAILER... Alternatively, a hidden word: BANSHEE has "SHE", HEARTBREAKER has "HE", WAILER has "AIL"... Hidden words: WAILER contains "WAIL", BANSHEE "BANSHEE" (wail), CARPET contains "CAR" and "PET", and so on.
• Attraction: FIREWORKS, CONNECTION, SPARK, CHEMISTRY. PIP isn't in that group.
PIP could be a Great Expectations character: Pip, Estella... Alternatively, Pip, Banshee, Wailer, Heartbreaker are songs? Or X-Men: Banshee, Pip, Wolverine... X-Men members include Banshee, Pip (Gambit's friend), and Spark. Bob Marley and the Wailers... "Heartbreaker" is a Pat Benatar song.
Another idea: Gladys Knight and the Pips, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Banshees (Siouxsie and the Banshees), Heartbreakers (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers). Those are backing bands, so that group is PIP, WAILER, BANSHEE, HEARTBREAKER.
The trap is probably the shoreline group together with TILE or similar. Alternatively the attraction group takes SPARK, and "strand" fits as well. I'll guess the trap is CARPET, TILE, WOOD, BANK, but it must not take three from one group, so something like SPARK, COAST, TILE, PIP is more plausible. I'll go with a simple option.

HOW TO PLAY

Available words: NOAA, EAVE, PARAMOUNT, CANE, WILLING, N.F.L., GAME, OUTFIT, READY, ABLE, EAGER, DOWN, SUBARU, NASA, EQUIP, PREPARE
prompt: 729
Possible groups:
• Logos with stars/mountains: PARAMOUNT, SUBARU, NOAA, NASA, N.F.L. (stars appear in several of these logos)
• Willing: WILLING, READY, ABLE, EAGER, GAME
• Get ready: PREPARE, EQUIP, OUTFIT, READY
• Hidden words or homophones: EAVE, CANE, DOWN, GAME... Adding a letter: EAVE+S = EAVES, CANE... Adding a letter to the front: CANE→ SCANE? Hurricane: CANE. Hidden "Eave" could be Eve, "Cane" Cain, "Down" ... Biblical: EAVE→Eve, CANE→Cain, ABLE→Abel, NOAA→Noah, EAGER... DOWN... So homophones of biblical figures: EAVE (Eve), CANE (Cain), ABLE (Abel), NOAA (Noah).
That leaves logos with stars: PARAMOUNT, SUBARU, NASA, N.F.L. (NOAA is in the Bible group). DOWN fits with willing: "down" (up for it), GAME, EAGER, WILLING, and READY.
Counting the remaining words: WILLING, GAME, EAGER, DOWN, READY, PREPARE, EQUIP, OUTFIT. The prepare group needs 4 of PREPARE, EQUIP, OUTFIT, READY, so READY goes there. The willing group is then WILLING, GAME, EAGER, DOWN.
The trap is likely NOAA with the logos (NOAA, NASA, N.F.L., Subaru), or READY in the willing group.

Available words: TALK, LITTER, POTATO, PICTURE, SCATTER, FEATURE, PEPPER, SPRINKLE, FLICK, TOOTH, BRAIN, SIXTEEN, PRUNE, FILM, SHAR PEI, CREPE PAPER
prompt: 742
Groups to find:
• Wrinkled things: PRUNE, SHAR PEI, CREPE PAPER, POTATO (a baked potato?), or maybe RAISIN-like items.
• Movie: PICTURE, FEATURE, FLICK, FILM.
• Spread around: LITTER, SCATTER, SPRINKLE, PEPPER (to pepper is to sprinkle).
• ___ + a word: TALK, TOOTH, BRAIN, SIXTEEN, POTATO. Possibly "Small ___": small talk. "Sweet ___": sweet talk, sweet tooth, sweet potato, sweet sixteen, sweet pepper. "Brain" has no "sweet" link, so BRAIN goes with wrinkled (the brain is wrinkled).
Wrinkled things: PRUNE, SHAR PEI, CREPE PAPER, BRAIN.
Sweet ___: TALK, TOOTH, SIXTEEN, POTATO, and PEPPER. That is five candidates, so PEPPER goes with the spread-around group (litter, scatter, sprinkle, pepper). That leaves POTATO in the sweet group.
The movie group is PICTURE, FEATURE, FLICK, FILM. FILM could also mean a thin layer, but nothing else fits there.
The trap is probably the sweet group with PEPPER in place of one of its words, so I'll list TALK, TOOTH, SIXTEEN, PEPPER.

Available words: CONE, GREEK/ROMAN GOD, PROGRESSIVE, FICTIONAL BOXER, THEATER, DEPARTED, LIBERAL, CUP, GOOD SHEPHERD, SHAKE, SPLIT, RAINMAKER, MARTIAN, BLUE, SPACECRAFT, LEFT
prompt: 765
These words look like Matt Damon films, Rocky-related items, ice cream items, and left-leaning political terms.
Matt Damon films: DEPARTED, GOOD SHEPHERD, RAINMAKER, MARTIAN (also Liberal? no).
Ice cream: CONE, CUP, SHAKE, SPLIT (banana split).
Left-leaning: PROGRESSIVE, LIBERAL, BLUE, LEFT.
Remaining: GREEK/ROMAN GOD, FICTIONAL BOXER, THEATER, SPACECRAFT. These are all things named Apollo: Apollo god, Apollo Creed, Apollo Theater, Apollo spacecraft. That leaves 4 groups of 4 so far, but the count is off: 16 words, with the Apollo group of 4, Damon of 4, ice cream of 4, and left of 4. Total 16. Good.
Possible trap: Matt Damon films include "Departed", "Martian", "Good Shepherd", "Rainmaker", but also "Split"? No, that's not Damon. "Progressive" is an insurance company (Flo). Trap candidate: Apollo items could extend, but the likely trap is the left-leaning group with SPLIT (a split) or "Blue Cup." I'll name the trap as the left group, possibly including LEFT, LIBERAL, PROGRESSIVE, and BLUE, with each word being a plausible alternative. Not certain.

• Predict: DIVINE, FORECAST, CALL, READ (also SPIRIT?)
• Music genres: RAP, CHORAL, AMERICANA, JAZZ, SPIRIT(ual)?
• Past tense of break/... : BROKE, BLEW, BURST, SPLIT, READ, CAST... BLEW is "blew" (blow); BROKE, BURST, SPLIT all mean to break apart. Past tenses: BROKE, BLEW, SPLIT, BURST, READ, FORECAST (also past tense), CALL no.
Predict: DIVINE, CALL, FORECAST, READ... also SPIRIT? No. Predict needs four: DIVINE, FORECAST, CALL, READ. Then the past tense group: BROKE, BLEW, BURST, SPLIT. Music: RAP, CHORAL, AMERICANA, JAZZ. Ghosts: SPIRIT, WIGHT, SHADE, SPECTER.
Trap: past-tense words BROKE, BLEW, SPLIT, READ, FORECAST, BURST might be a trap; the set of irregular past tenses with READ and FORECAST fits the trap. I'll choose BROKE, BLEW, SPLIT, READ.

Available words: KETTLE, FLIPPER, FIN, FIDDLE, WING, SWEET, MICROWAVE, POPPER, TENDER, TRIFLE, ARM, STOVETOP, THROW, FRITTER, WARM, KIND
prompt: 730
Possible groups:
• Popcorn makers: KETTLE, MICROWAVE, STOVETOP, POPPER (also air popper).
• Fish/animal limbs: FLIPPER, FIN, WING, ARM.
• Toy with: FIDDLE, TRIFLE, FRITTER, THROW. Verbs meaning to waste or play aimlessly: FIDDLE, TRIFLE, FRITTER (away), and perhaps TOY. THROW away also fits, so "___ away": FRITTER, THROW, FIDDLE? Hmm.
• Gentle/caring: SWEET, TENDER, WARM, KIND.
That leaves FIDDLE, TRIFLE, FRITTER, THROW for the fourth group. Waste/dally: fiddle, trifle, fritter, throw away. Fine.
Trap: the popcorn group may include KETTLE, with a distractor in a different group. FLIPPER and POPPER are also pinball-related, but that's weaker. A trap could be the arm/limb set with TENDER or WARM... "Throw" and "arm" are baseball terms, but a trap needs words drawn from different real groups. Candidate: WING, FIN, ARM, THROW (things related to a pitcher?). I'll go with the pinball/popcorn-style overlap instead: FLIPPER, POPPER, KETTLE, THROW.

Available words: TAP, SWIPE, EEK, LOAF, COUNTER, HIVE, VEG, LOUNGE, QUASH, PINCH, CHILL, TABLE, SCROLL, BAR, ALE, BOOTH
prompt: 725
Possible groups:
• Touchscreen gestures: TAP, SWIPE, PINCH, SCROLL
• Relax: LOAF, VEG, LOUNGE, CHILL
• Pub or diner seating and fixtures: COUNTER, TABLE, BAR, BOOTH, TAP
• Hidden or added letter: EEK, HIVE, QUASH, ALE. Adding a letter gives "week", "hive" → "chive", "squash", "scale"? Adding S gives "SHIVE"? Adding a letter to the front: EEK → LEEK, HIVE → CHIVE, QUASH → SQUASH, ALE → KALE. These are vegetables with the first letter missing (leek, chive, squash, kale), so that group is EEK, HIVE, QUASH, ALE.
That leaves the touchscreen words, the relax words, and the restaurant words. The restaurant group is COUNTER, TABLE, BAR, BOOTH, and TAP is a gesture, so TAP stays with the gestures. PINCH and CHILL don't fit anywhere else, so the groups hold.
The trap: TAP could fit with BAR, as in pub words (TAP, BAR, ALE, LOUNGE). That set is TAP, BAR, ALE, LOUNGE, which draws from different real groups.

HOW TO PLAY

Available words: CHAIR, UNCHAINED, HEAD, CHEST, FIELD, FICTION, COCO, GROUNDS, LAWN, CHIEF, PEA, GREEN, DIRECTOR, DOGS, BROWN, HAZEL
prompt: 733
Tarantino films: UNCHAINED (Django Unchained), FICTION (Pulp Fiction), DOGS (Reservoir Dogs), BROWN (Jackie Brown).
Boss: CHAIR, HEAD, CHIEF, DIRECTOR.
Coffee ___ / Coffee things: GROUNDS, COCO? Words + "nut": CHEST-nut, COCO-nut, HAZEL-nut, PEA-nut, BROWN? (no), GREEN? So nuts: CHEST, COCO, HAZEL, PEA.
Remaining: FIELD, GROUNDS, LAWN, GREEN: grass areas.
Tarantino has BROWN, and the traps are probably colors: GREEN, BROWN, HAZEL... Colors: GREEN, BROWN, HAZEL, plus maybe CHIEF? The trap could be eye colors: GREEN, BROWN, HAZEL, plus... no fourth. Alternatively, a grassy area trap including GREEN, BROWN, HAZEL, and PEA (green things). I'll go with the trap GREEN, BROWN, HAZEL, PEA.

Available words: SHAM, LABOR, ENERGY, PASS, THROW, UPHOLD, DISCARD, KEEP, FULFILL, JUSTICE, STATE, BLANKET, DRAW, SHEET, PLAY, HONOR
prompt: 729
Possible groups:
• Bedding: SHAM, BLANKET, SHEET, plus one more (PASS? no). Pillow sham, blanket, sheet, and... "COMFORTER"? Maybe DRAW sheet... "THROW" is a bedding item (a throw blanket). So bedding: SHAM, BLANKET, SHEET, THROW.
• Department of ___: LABOR, ENERGY, JUSTICE, STATE (also Defense). So DEPARTMENT: LABOR, ENERGY, JUSTICE, STATE.
• Keep a promise: UPHOLD, KEEP, FULFILL, HONOR.
• Card game actions: PASS, DISCARD, DRAW, PLAY, (THROW, KEEP also possible).
Trap: card actions could include KEEP or THROW, but the real groups are settled. The trap is likely KEEP, PASS, DISCARD, DRAW, or something similar. I'll pick PASS, DISCARD, DRAW, KEEP, where KEEP belongs to the promise group and PLAY is the real card word.

Then male animals: RAM, JACK, BUCK, BILLY.
Dynasties: HAN, SONG, MING, TANG.

Available words: DAWN, WED, ALF, START, FUSE, VHS, NES, COMBINE, BIRTH, GENESIS, FLY, FLOWER, MTV, POLE, DAY, BOND
prompt: 714
Possible groups:
• Beginnings: DAWN, START, BIRTH, GENESIS (also FLOWER?)
• Join together: FUSE, COMBINE, BOND, WED
• 80s things / TV: ALF, VHS, NES, MTV (1980s icons)
• Words that take "May" prefix: MAYFLY, MAYFLOWER, MAYPOLE, MAYDAY
That leaves the groups:
• May-: FLY, FLOWER, POLE, DAY
• Join: FUSE, COMBINE, BOND, WED
• 80s: ALF, VHS, NES, MTV
• Beginnings: DAWN, START, BIRTH, GENESIS
GENESIS is also a Sega console, so it could belong with NES and VHS as a trap. Console and media formats: NES, GENESIS, VHS, MTV. But ALF would then have no home, so this is a trap candidate.
